The Haji Ali Dargah can be reached by a narrow causeway only at low tide. A handsome example of Indian Islamic architecture, associated with legends about doomed lovers. The dargah contains the tomb of Haji Ali.

The Haji Ali Dargah was constructed in 1431 in memory of a rich Muslim merchant, Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari (R.A.). who gave up all his worldly possessions before making a pilgrimage to Mecca. He had traveled all around the world & settled in Mumbai. once the Saint saw a poor woman crying on the road, holding an empty vessel. He asked her what the problem was. She sobbed that her husband would thrash her since she had stumbled and accidentally spilled the oil she was carrying. He asked her to take him to the spot where she lost the oil.

There, he jabbed a finger into the soil and the oil gushed out. The overjoyed woman filled up the vessel and went home. But he had a recurring dream that he had injured Earth by his act. Full of remorse, he soon fell ill and directed his followers to cast the coffin carrying his body into the Arabian Sea, once he died. Haji Ali left this world during his journey to Mecca and miraculously the casket carrying his body, floated back to these shores, getting stuck in the string of rocky islets just off the shore of Worli. Thus, the Dargah was constructed there.

Haji Ali Dargah Architecture

A large number of pilgrims visit this mosque especially on Thursdays and Fridays to obtain the blessings of the saint. The mosque is built in the Indo-Islamic style of architecture. Built on a small island. The mosque is sited about 500 yards from the shoreline, in the middle of Worli Bay. This island is connected to the Mahalakshmi area by a narrow walkway, which is not even constrained by railings and is prone to sea waters during high-tide. Consequently, you can reach the mosque only during low-tides. The walkway, offering 500- yard-walk, is the highlight of this expedition, where the touch of cool waters and pleasing breeze altogether will make this a divine experience.

Sprawling in an area of 4,500 meters, Haji Ali Dargah has a tomb that is always covered with a brocaded red and green sheet, supported by a delicate silver frame. The marble pillars inside the main hall are decorated with multihued mirrors and embrace the ninety-nine names of Allah. As per the Muslim traditions separate praying rooms for ladies and gents are provided here to pay their respects. During the high tide, the dargah seems completely isolated with no access. It looks more like a little island.
