Jijamata Udyaan formerly called Rani Bagh or Victoria Gardens. Now also known as Veermata Jijabai Bhonsle Udyan, is a zoo and garden located at Byculla, in the heart of Mumbai, Maharashtra State, India.
Victoria Gardens was the initial name of the gardens, which was later changed to Jijamata Udyan. Rani Jijamata Udyaan is a well-laid out garden in the Byculla area of Mumbai, the garden was established in 1861.
Its interior design is based on the Italian Renaissance architecture pattern which is evident in its huge clock tower at its entrance. Its lush greenery brags of various plants and trees, which make the environment serene and beautiful to see. Spread over an area of 48 acres, Rani Jijamata Udyaan is centrally located in Mumbai, the erstwhile Bombay.
Jijamata Udyaan Attraction
Jijamata Udyan is popularly called Rani Bagh. it also comprises the renowned Victoria and Albert Museum (now renamed as Bhau Daji Lad Museum), within its limits. This museum is known for its awesome collection of archeological findings. To its east, there is a colossal figure of an elephant that was actually brought from Elephanta Caves.
What’s more, Victoria Gardens has always been popular amongst the children, due to the fact it houses the city’s own zoo. The zoo in Victoria Gardens houses several species of animals and birds that have been declared as endangered. Mammals: Currently Mumbai Zoo houses 20 species of mammals.
Birds: Currently 38 different species of birds inside the zoo.
Reptiles: Currently 9 different species of reptiles in at Jijamata garden.
Botanical Garden at Byculla Zoo
According to the latest news about Mumbai zoo in newspapers. There are 3213 trees which belong to 57 different families with 173 genera and 285 species all inside jijamata Udyaan. It was calculated that among those 285 listed species. Also, there are 30 species which are endangered and few of the very rare and rarest species of trees. This botanical garden section of Mumbai zoo will not be touched in revamp process.
