Khadakwasla Dam is a dam situated 20 km from the City of Pune in Maharashtra, India. The dam is built across the Mutha River, near the Khadakwasla village. Hence the dam derives its name, Khadakwasla Dam. Khadakwasla is a village particularly famous for a big dam which serves as the main source of water supply for the city of Pune.
The Khadakwasla Dam is among the most visited spots around Pune, especially during the monsoons. The dam is popularly known as the ‘Chowpati’ of Pune. when you want to spend some moments of solitude, places like Khadakwasla become the perfect destinations. You can come here any time to make your weekends blissful. But usually, the rainy season is considered to be the best time to visit such places as they are in the prime of their natural beauty during the rains.
Among the main tourist attractions around the dam are Kudje Village, Peacock Bay, and Neelkanteshwar. Neelkanteshwar is a beautiful hill where you find a beautiful Shiva Temple. This is the place where the eyes of art lovers rest on the exquisite cement sculptures in hundreds. These include the display of some of the important scenes from Hindu Mythology. Also the great saints and revered personalities from the Indian History.
The dam was constructed in the year 1873 to supply water to the city of Pune. It was however destroyed in the year 1961 because the water from the Panshet Dam had overflowed causing devastating floods in the city. The dam was rebuilt in the following years to counter the ongoing water crisis.
In the vicinity of the dam, there is a Dental Centre, a Veterinary Hospital, the well-known National Defence Academy and Central Water & Power Research Station (CWPRS). Just a few kilometers up the road, lies Panshet dams, Varasgaon dam and the fort of Sinhagad, once ruled by the great Maratha emperor, Shivaji Maharaj. which mainly supply water for irrigation.
