Saras Baug is a major landmark in Pune City. The place where the park now stands was once occupied by a small lake. However, the lake got dried up and was later developed into Baug. The whole 25-acre complex is known as Saras Baug.
The Ganesh temple in the park has been the source of inspiration for centuries. The Ganesh temple in Baug is also known as Talyatla Ganpati. In 1784, Shrimant Sawai Madhavrao Peshwa built a small temple in Sarasbaug and installed the idol of Shree Siddhivinayak Gajanan, the God he worshipped. The idol of Lord Ganesh in the temple is made up of flint stone and is an extremely beautiful piece of work. the ceremony was held on January 22, 1732, which was also a Saturday.
