Girijatmaj temple Lenyadri (Asthavinayak)

The Girijatmaj temple at Lenyadri is the Sixth Ganesha temple to be visited during the Asthavinayak Darshan tour. It is a Swayambhu idol which is carved into a rock. Girijatmaj Vinayak refers to the Ganesh as the son of Parvati. Girija is another name for Parvati and Atamaj means son. This is only the temple of the Ashtavinayak 15 years at Lenyadri. The demon king Sindhu, who knew that his death would be at the hands of Ganesh, sent demons like Krur, Balasur, Vyomasur, Kshemma, Kushal, etc. to kill Ganesh in Lenyadri. Instead, Ganesh killed all these demons in his childhood. Ganpati also performed many bal-leelas in this place.

Girijatmaj Temple is situated in Lenyadri mountain. Girijatmaj Astvinayak Temple is the only temple of the Ashtavinayak which is on a mountain and is built in the locale of Buddhist Cave Temples. Lenyadri is situated on the North-west bank of river Kukadi.

A beautiful temple placed on the hill top is approached after climbing 307 steps .Out of 18 Buddhist caves on the mountain, Girijatmaj Vinayak’s Temple is in the 8th cave. These caves are also known as Ganesh Gufa. The entire temple is carved out of single stone & is facing south. In front of main Mandir, there is hugeSabhamandap (Hall) which is nearly 53 feet long & 51 feet broad & to your surprise there is not a singlr pillar in this Sabhamandap.

Another nearby attraction here is the Shivneri fort where the legendary Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born. The drive itself is an awesome experience with sugarcane fields on either side and later on amidst the tall Eucalyptus trees.
