The Vaitarna Dam also called Modak Sagar Dam. The Dam was Built by British Military Engineer lowsone in 1701, who died during its tunnel construction.
Later the dam was renovated in 1954 during the Nehru tenure by Bmc engineer Narayan Modak, hence, named after him. before him, the dam was renovated trice.
The dam built across the vaitarna river is divided into three parts the upper vaitarna dam, middle vaitarna dam, and lower vaitarna dam. The lower Dam, also called Modaksagar Dam. This is a gravity dam on Vaitarna river. And upper dam is scenic dam site. Its situated at a distance of about 20 km from khodala in Thane district near Mumbai.
Also, Vaitarna Lake is one of the best sweet water lakes of Mumbai. It is the chief source of water and electricity to the Mumbai city. It will supply 455 million liters of drinking water every day to thane and Mumbai city.
